Slot machines are the most popular among all casino games. They are easy to play, you play them by yourself without having to beat other people and take their money, and they are packed with exciting lights and sounds. It’s fun when 2 or 3 people are sitting together and chatting away as they spin the reels on their favorite slot machines. Here are some facts you may not have known about slot machine games. You just may enjoy playing them even more.
Fact No. 1: Slot Machine Games Provide Scientifically Documented Benefits
Medical science is not going to start prescribing that you play slot machine games to lift yourself out of depression but there are benefits to playing slot machine games. These games can be very relaxing as long as you don’t get caught up in the sense of need that problem gamblers develop. If you just feel that playing the game is entertainment and not a source of income, then a slot machine can help you de-stress. Reducing stress is possible through many different activities where you don’t have to think. By taking your thoughts off your problems and most pressing needs you are able to relax the tension in your body, release some of the nervous pressure you feel, and literally change the flow of hormones and chemicals in your body.
Any stress-reducing activity causes your body to release fewer stress hormones, and reducing stress overall is generally healthy. Of course, sitting at a slot machine for hours on end is not a healthy activity. Just as when you should get up and move around the office at least once an hour, you should get up and move around for a few minutes every hour you are at a casino.
It’s a good idea to plan to spend no more than one hour on any game at the casino, whether you are standing around a table or sitting down for a game.
Fact No. 2: Slot Machine Random Number Generators are Not Truly Random
You may have heard that it is impossible to detect a pattern in the way that slot machines produce results because they use random number generators to determine how their reels spin. This is true as far as it goes but there is more to the apparent randomness of the slot machine you are playing than you realize.
Random number generators are special computer chips that are securely embedded in the motherboards of slot machines. These devices have been certified to comply with government regulations for producing random numbers. But anyone with proper training in math and computer science will tell you that there are no algorithms that produce truly random numbers.
That’s right: those random number generators are not really generating random numbers. Instead, they are generating numbers in very long sequences that you and I cannot possibly second-guess. That makes the numbers “random enough”. But in the article “How Online Slot Machines Work”, the Web Gaming Info site also explains that these random numbers are hidden from us anyway. You don’t know what the numbers are or where they are being used.
Fact No. 3: Slot Machine Games Are More Interactive Now Than They Used to Be
If you have not played slot machine games in at least four or five years, you will be shocked at the stunning changes that are taking place in the game design industry. If you play a game like the Moonlight Mystery slot machine game, you’ll find that you are doing more than just spinning the reels. You are prompted to make choices and interact with the game in many ways.
You may find some slot machine games include active shooter bonus rounds where you guide a target and pull a trigger. Slot machine games are becoming very creative.
Fact No. 4: Most Slot Machine Games Pay Back Over 90% of the Money Players Bet
This is called “return to player” and in the most competitive markets, such as Las Vegas and the online casino industry, the slots game designers have to think about how much money the games keep versus how much they pay back to players.
The theoretical return to player is a very important number for people who write slot machine reviews. Although you can still find remote land-based casinos that keep 30-40% of player money, the competitive markets have pushed return to player up above 90%. The 94-95% range is about average and a few slot games go above 96%.
The theoretical return to player for blackjack is considered one of the best among casino games and that is only 98%.
How this works is that you have 1,000 people play a slot machine game. Each player puts in about $500. That is a total of $500,000 in real money. The machines take bets and award prizes as the players spin the reels. Some people play the machine a long time and other for only a few minutes. Each player leaves the machine with a different amount of money.
Across the whole group of 1,000 players the casino will keep about $30,000 and the players walk away with the rest. But they will have played millions of dollars in bets on that one machine. So why do slot machines have such a bad reputation? Because that hypothetical $570,000 is not paid back evenly to all the players. Some of them will walk away with nothing and others will walk away with thousands of dollars.
Fact No. 5: Slot Machine Games Redistribute Wealth on a Random Basis
Although slot machine games are classified differently from lotteries, they do share some common points with lottery games. Whereas the lottery works from a single pool of prize money that is shared among all players in the same game, a slot machine works with a revolving pool of money that takes or shares money from successive games.
The slot machine is always paying a prize to someone even if the prize is less than the player bets. So playing the slot machine is a lot like walking up to an ATM machine that is broken. Sometimes the ATM machine takes your money and keeps it and sometimes the ATM machine gives you money. That is the net effect of what happens with a slot machine. It takes money from some people and gives money to others.
Fact No. 6: The Larger the Bets You Make the Faster You Lose Your Money
Although it is true you win the largest prizes when you make the largest possible bets, the amount of money you wager on a slot machine game does not have any effect on whether the game pays you a prize. Because you have only a limited amount of money the more aggressive your betting is the faster you lose money.
Here is a simple way to illustrate the problem. Let’s assume that a slot machine is rigged to pay you a 5X prize on every 15th spin. You take $1000 to the machine and start playing it. The minimum bet is $5 and the maximum bet is $100.
If you bet just $5 on every spin you’ll spend $75 on your first 15 bets. That 15th spin then pays you a 5X prize, or $25. You just got back 1/3 of your money.
If you bet the maximum amount on every spin, you will run out of money on the 10th spin. You will never get to the $500 prize you hope to win, but even if you had $1500 to bet you would still get back only 1/3 of your money.
In the first scenario you still have $925 + the $25 prize you won to play with after 15 spins. In the second scenario you go completely broke in 10 spins.
Except for the fact that in real life you don’t know when the slot machine you are playing will pay you a large prize, this is how the games work.
Fact No. 7: The Slot Machine Games Don’t Keep Track of How Many Jackpots They Have Paid
Some players have a superstition that if a slot machine has paid a jackpot it is “not ready to pay again” for a while. In fact, because the prizes are awarded on the basis of that random number generator, the slot machines don’t keep track of when they pay jackpots and try to space them out.
You have as good a chance of winning a jackpot on the next spin as the guy who just won a jackpot did on his spin.

A casino might lose money on a slot machine over the course of a few days or weeks. But the casinos know that the numbers are on their side. Eventually the slot machine will keep enough money to even things out according to the theoretical return to player for which they have been programmed.
